Review of Fairy Tail
Fairy Tail was one of the first anime that I have watched. I recently rewatched the show after watching over 100 animes. I can now say that Fairy Tail is not a perfect show, and it has many flaws. Even so, I can strongly say that it has a very special place in my heart. I will keep spoilers to a minimum but there will be some because that is really the only way I can prove a few points (I will warn before saying). First, the story. The actual storyline is very good. There is a synopsis already so I won't be summarizing anything. But, I always liked adventure type shows. One Piece is a good example. The arcs themselves are pretty interesting and every arc was, for the most part, very enjoyable. (Kind of a spoiler) They did do some very generic arcs, like tournament arcs, but I personally think that they did the arcs very well. Some arcs were pretty dragged out, but nothing too bad. Overall pacing was quite good. The storyline is honestly generic, but it doesn't mean that it is bad. Overall opinion of the story, pretty good but could've done just a bit more.
Art style: I won't get too much into this, but I liked the art style quite a lot. Of course, comparing the art style we normally see today to the first season of Fairy Tail would just be unfair, but it was pretty good and it kept getting better and better.
Sound: Nothing crazy here. Voice actors did a pretty good job and the sound effects were pretty basic but worked.
Characters: I think the main reason I got so attached to this show were the characters. They all had different personalities and the character designs were amazing. Nux Taku's video about Fairy Tail really dives into this very well, but in short, there really isn't one main character. Of course, it does mainly follow Natsu and Lucy, but a very big portion of the show actually revolves around the other characters in Fairy Tail. They have great character backgrounds that really allow you to understand their character. The overall character development was also pretty darn good. I do wish we were able to explore the backgrounds of certain characters in other guilds and not just Fairy Tail, but that just proves that they did a good job with creating such interesting characters, at least in my opinion.
Enjoyment: 9/10. I seriously found this series really fun. I got emotional when the characters got emotional (But I didn't cry because I don't cry). The arcs were basic, but there's a good reason that they are so overused in shonen. If the show does a good job executing it, it can seriously be exciting. I was able to spend my entire day watching episodes of this.
Cons: There is a reason that Fairy Tail gets the hate that it does. I obviously enjoyed it, but I can definitely say that me rewatching the series was definitely not as good as the first time. One because I was younger so I didn't really know what a "good anime" looked like and two because I was able to pay more attention to the smaller things because I knew what was going on. I will say the power scaling is absolutely broken. It made no sense. I'm ok with the "friendship is everything" kind of stuff but it almost took the seriousness of the entire series out. The plot armor in this case was a bit too much. (Big spoiler warning)...
Makarov died more times than my parents saying "I love you". That's obviously a joke and exaggerated but not by much. They really didn't want anyone in the guild to die. You could tell. The "we are being manipulated to kill eachother but instead, I'll kill myself" cliche happened between Grey and Juvia. Juvia basically dies but then Wendy conveniently finds herself right where Juvia is. Also, Grey wanted revenge for killing Juvia against Invel. Apparently, Invel is like one of the strongest people ever but Grey has the power of friendship on his side so he obviously won. I mean, Grey wasn't weak at all but from seeing him having 0 chance of beating him during the first part of fighting to him having absolutely no problem defeating the one of the strongest wizards is a bit much. But that isn't even too bad compared to the next part. Erza fighting her mom was the absolute most broken thing ever. Literally, every single bone in Erza's body was completely broken, but she can just do a little grunting and gets back up to destroy a METEOR into oblivion. There are a lot of parts throughout the series that really just makes you question why you are so invested in these fights when you know the good guys will win with basically no losses. No one in their guild dies or even gets seriously injured like losing an arm or something.
Overall: 7/10. Great series overall. I enjoyed it a lot but that power scaling was certainly not its bright spot.
