Review of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc
I hate shounen anime. Like really can't buy this whole "power of friendship" and "i can do it if i believe in it strong enough" bull that every other show rides on. But not because it's childish or lacks a story. It's because most shounen shows lack impact and style and that should be the backbone of every over the top anime. Like man, just make it look good that's all i ask. Instead most of the times i get 10-20 episodes of horribly animated talking heads and 30 seconds of sakuga at the finale. At best. And i like simple stories and simple charactersbut only when i have something pretty to look at at the same time.
But then - BAM! - Demon Slayer Entertainment District Arc rides in on the rails of the mugen train and absolutely wrecks me and my understanding of what shounen anime could be. I finished the whole show in one sitting, sweat dripping down my back from excitement. It's like watching a stunningly animated movie but 11 times. The build-up, how the new characters and the setting were brought in, and the big and i mean HUGE fight, and the FINALE absolutely blows your mind. You have to be ufotable to pull something like that off.
And i've read trough some of the reviews and people are bashing this show for having a simple story, one-dimensional characters and stuff being pulled from their ass all the time. Well it's all true but what do you expect from a shounen little baby-man? This is big-testicle territory, where you swing a sword and flames come out. How do you expect to have a layered story and multi-dimensional characters with inner turmoils when there is a guy who has three wives and is a cool ninja and there's a sexy demon lady who wants to step on everyone. Forget about useless stuff like story here. Demon Slayer is all style and less substance and it's not trying hard to be something other than that. This is pure shounen honesty backed up with fantastic animation and sound. If you want to watch something deeper then try Katanagatari or Sonny Boy.
