9: Ruler's Crown · review
My heart aches from watching this. As a longtime visual novel fan, it’s just painful to see what they did to a beautiful VN. Instead of adapting it thoughtfully, they tried to cram all the routes into one, and the result makes almost no sense. As with many VN adaptations, I usually have issues with the choice of romance option — Shuffle! and Steins;Gate come to mind, but here, it’s downright outrageous. The main character has a convenient “plot ability” that lets the writers shoehorn all routes together, which could have been clever, but instead it just feels forced. The romance choice is the worst part. Kujo, the main option they go with, is easily the least interesting character. Every other character from the VN would’ve made a more compelling choice. Personally, I enjoyed Sora and Noa the most in the original VN, and it’s heart-breaking to see them side-lined.
That said, the anime itself is not boring the pacing, visuals, and some of the story moments can be engaging. But all the enjoyment is constantly undermined by weak writing, forced plot devices, and a bland main character.
As a VN reader and huge fan, I just can’t recommend this adaptation. It ignores the strengths of the source material and replaces them with poor choices.
Rating: 3/10 – sad, frustrating, and a real disappointment for anyone who loved the VN.
