Review of Astra Lost in Space
Hear me out. Kanata no Astra is peak. I had a VERY hard time getting through episodes 4-6. Part of the reason is that I was watching it in dub as I was cooking at the time, but most of it was the writing. The spoiler-free explanation of the show's poor writing is bad pacing. Almost every episode has action scene after action scene that doesn't end up resolving till the end of the episode with that corny ending track playing over it. There are lots of moments where, as the viewer, you don't get a chance to catch your breath, and the stakes aredriven way too high, way too soon, only to be resolved with a deus ex machina EVERY TIME. However, the show, as a whole, is definitely worth watching. Episodes 7-12 more than make up for 4-6. I like how they explore ideas in sci-fi that we don't normally see. I think modern sci-fi has a problem where lots of films and shows are set in space without being about space. Kanata no Astra doesn't fall victim to that problem. If you like the genres: space sci-fi, survival, and against-the-odds, you'll enjoy Kanata no Astra.
