Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Beautiful Nightmare. To me, this is THE definitive Devilman. Even surpass the original. Of course, this is subjective view but to me this is THE best Devilman adaptation ever. Yuasa's expressionism style goes surprisingly well with Devilman's dark and depressing story. Every sad and heartbreaking moments got amplified to 1000 by the highly expressive art style. Characters' face and body contorted and flex along with their emotions that breaking and twisting in exaggerated yet realistic way that you can clearly feel their pain and sadness. Visuals of this anime just clawed into your feelings real deep that there will be some scenes that's going to burn intoyour memory longer than you expected.
The grim story that Devilman was known of also executed perfectly. It feels very organic. Not exaggerated for the sake of showing gore or sex to shock viewers but to naturally portray these sides of human beings. Some part also got changed to add feeling of realism to the story. It's pretty strange and fascinating how the most unrealistic looking Devilman anime portrayed the most realistic tone and emotion the most.
Also, music by Kensuke Ushio which mixed between orchestral and techno fits the show surprisingly well. They weren't just sounds good and memorable but they also supercharged emotions in each moments to the max like some kind of emotion nitro rocket fuel or something. Like the art style, they can sounds unconventional in some tracks but it fits well.
