Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
[Spoilers ahead] Story: Fell apart during the last third or so, mainly everything after Ryoko Tamiya's death. I don't have much to say about the story, since I think it took a backseat to the main interest of the show: the relationship between Shinichi and Migi. However, I will note that it felt like a story akin to Tokyo Ghoul at the start, but strayed away in a positive manner later on... only to take a huge nosedive in the latter half, focusing on police swat forces and the like, completely steering into the whole police genre that I was enjoying an absence from. Art: I'm notone to pick out obviously good or bad animation, but nothing stood out as bad so I'm inclined to say it was pretty good. The style, character designs and stills are pleasant.
Sound: Soundtrack was inconsistent in quality and some of the time the music did not match the scene whatsoever. The ost could not find any commonality, switching between classical scores and dubstep willy-nilly. I watched the opening theme once and was not impressed. Skipped it the rest of the series.
Character: There were some great characters and some really bad characters in this show. Shinichi and Migi were great characters, in my opinion, playing off each other perfectly throughout the series. The interaction between the two is the highest praise I can give the show. As for the supporting cast, Murano was boring and only there to fulfill the love interest role in the show. She saw no character development and was toyed with the whole series, even up until the final moments. The only other two characters to note in my opinion were Ryoko Tamiya and Goto. Goto was extremely boring as a villain and felt shoehorned into the latter parts of the show. As for Tamiya, I really enjoyed her character. Her motives were unique to any other parasite and she fit the "is she really a villain or not" gray area that actually makes a character interesting. As I mentioned before, her death marked a huge negative turning point for the show. I thought her character carried the plot during her time alive and that her death didn't serve much purpose at all, not impacting the plot after her death.
Enjoyment: I'm really easy to please, so seeing the fights and conversations kept me entertained. I really enjoyed all of Migi's shapes and his overall movement
