Review of Shiki
Pros: Story: - Intricate - Great in building up suspense - Dialogue was very enjoyable! Art: - Rag doll character design - or: that somewhat similar character design as in Lelouche's anime: long, slender characters. - Backgrounds (the house of dr. Ozaki for example: that is some high quality drawing/painting!). - The way CGI is handled, is very professional and really blends in with the rest of the 2D animation.Sound:
- One of the best OST, because every I repeat: EVERY song piece is beautiful and/or catchy.
- OP1 was catchy.
Character:
- All characters mostly had believable motivations, all characters had interesting background stories.
Enjoyment:
- High, binge-watched the last 8 episodes in the evening.
Cons
Story:
- Some migth consider it to be more of a thriller/detective. The tag 'horror' should be reserved, IMHO, for animes like 'Another'
- Personally, I just could not force myself to believe that literally no one came to investigate so much death in one little place
- Somewhere along the line, I felt that the story tried to force me to rethink my stance on the vampires: they have feelings too blah blah - nah: they just killed people for their own benefit > that is a red flag and requires some heavy vengeance plot IMO > and you get just that.
Sound > none
Art
- Characters sometimes look bland, however: likely due to the art style itself.
Character:
- Motivations weren't always that believable for some:
>> Doctor turning psycho was not believable to me - because you're a doctor, doesn't mean you immediately have an urge to dissect everything living just to uncover their secretes.
>> The whole Yuuki character was just poorly written, I mean: a teenage boy who solemnly accepts his fate and then turns into a stoic wherewolf badass - this was more meant for junior monk than for purple-hair.
>> Pig-tail girl was super scared and then she snapped: this just is not believable for me - people don't snap that easy. If you want her to snap, you have to show some signs that she has a hidden snappability somewhere - but so sudden: meh.
These were some, and I think I'm a little unreasonable to summon al those 'flaws' of character.
Overall:
I really enjoyed the anime, mainly because it was full of suspence, required some form of thinking and had ejoyable dialogue. Recommended!
