Gintama is my favorite anime. It's an anime I turn to when I'm upset and need a good laugh, it's an anime I turn to when I'm bored, and it just makes me very happy in general. This does not mean that the anime doesn't get serious, it sometimes does, and when that happens I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat, eager for more. Story: I'm not very good at reviewing story lines in general so excuse me for that but anyways I won't re-tell what the story is about since there is a synopsis for that, but I will tell youthat this is a very episodic kind of anime. Most people might not like that, but I can assure you that there is still an interesting longer plot in the making--a lot like the Detective Conan style of anime--we can see that a major climax is slowly coming and often times we can't wait, which is also the reason why a lot of people dislike episodic animes. But still, I believe most people would find almost all of the irrelevant stories just as interesting and very funny--a lot of dirty jokes and just... cheesy-ness but that's what makes it enjoyable--I, personally, have almost never thought "this is boring" even though it can get repetitive sometimes.

Character: This is the best part about Gintama, I think. The characters are all unique and you'd be surprised, but some characters that you'd think would never show up again (again, because it's "episodic") actually would return and surprise! They hold quite a big role in the major plot. Gintoki himself is a great lead character, his past is just intriguing and you sometimes really can't understand what is going on in his head. He acts like he doesn't care, but in reality, he analyzes things way deeper than anyone would. And the best part? He's not perfect. That's what makes him an amazing hero.

I also find myself in love with all the side characters such as the rip-off Shinsengumi characters and the people Gintoki meets along the way. They all have interesting background stories and watching them interact with each other is really enjoyable. What I love about Gintama again: the series don't only focus on its male lead, they focus on other characters too.

Art: At first, I found it really hard to get used to Gintama's art, but over time I found the art really pretty in a comical way, especially the emotions the character portray. In the end, though, this is really subjective.

Sorry for the long review, I just have many feelings for this anime. I'll just conclude this shortly:
This anime has a bit of everything. Action. Romance (very tiny bit but still there). Tear-jerking stories. And a lot of comedy. If you throw away all criticism and just watch it purely to enjoy it, this anime could make you laugh, cry, and feel touched as you watch it. It might be hard to believe, but you'd be surprised how much you actually learn from watching it.

I suggest that you at least give it a try, and by giving it a try, I don't mean only watching one or two episodes. Give a few episodes, see how impressed you could get before turning away from it.
