Review of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
I was honestly surprised by the fact that this was, at the time of writing, #219 on the LetterBoxd top 250. This was above Your Name, The Lion King, Truman Show, and many more amazing movies. But honestly, it deserves to be up here. In the first 2 seasons of this show, I gave it a 7/10 (3.5/10). Season 1 was alrightSeason 2 was great! Only half the season though, the other half was, um, Endless Eight :vomit:
This movie? This movie was out of this world...
I will get into why.
First off, the world-building. This studio, Kyoto Animation, also made Clannad and Clannad After Story. Clannad was mid, but Clannad AS was amazing due to the fact that Clannad did all the world-building.
The same goes here. The first two seasons were mid. But here the movie built upon all the world-building of the past 2 seasons.
Second off, the story itself. It's one thing to take all that world-building, it is another to actually take it and make art.
That is precisely what they did here.
I will not spoil anything, but basically, Kyon gets woken up in a world that is different from his. Nagoto left him a message stating to get back to his old world, he needs a key.
That is the premise, but man it was amazing. This movie was *almost* three. hours. long. I did not feel it wasted a SECOND of it though.
It was amazing. The ending was amazing. This is one of the *few* animes that I am satisfied with the ending to the series and the entire show. Very rarely does that happen, 70% of the time I feel like I want more and while that may shade on Haruhi, I like a satisfying and complete ending.
The Music: Goddamn those piano notes were amazing. Seriously.
And they brought back the OG intro once again? *Chef's Kiss*
Animation: This is newer than Clannad. This has good animation. Similar styling to Clannad although S1 was older than Clannad so eh.
All In all, AMAZING movie.
Final Score: 9/10 Seriously good.
Thanks!
