An under-watched (near) masterpiece. Story: 6 This is the weak link. The overarching story here is the two main characters' journey across Japan in search of the 12 legendary swords, or the "Deviant Blades". The "why" is pretty vague throughout. Of course there are others looking to procure these swords, so that adds in a little more conflict here and there. Overall, though, the story is the reason Katanagatari is only a (near) masterpiece. Art: 10 I'll admit, I was a little skeptical when I saw the plain-looking character models. But the thing is, it just works. The art style is not only unique, it is a thing ofbeauty. Pause at moment, any given frame, and just admire the artistry. The fights in particular as visually stunning. It's quite simply one of the best looking shows I've had the pleasure of watching.

Sound: 10
One of the top 5 OSTs from any anime I've seen. The impressive part, though, is the range. One minute it'll hit you with a beautiful traditional Japanese song, the next there'll be a smooth R&B song that'll have you bobbing your head with the beat. Regardless of the genre, the music somehow always seems to fit. And the voice acting is absolutely top-notch across the board. From Shichika's droll delivery, to Togame's cheerful "Cheerio", to Hitei's devious-sounding monologues, it was some of the best voice acting I've heard.

Character: 10
The story revolves around the two main characters, and they steal the show. Togame is clearly the brains of the operation, and Shichika is the brawn. While Shichika, having lived on an island with his father and sister all his, is completely clueless to the outside world, Togame is a pint-sized schemer and self-described "strategian". While Shichika oftentimes comes off as an emotional drone, Togame is delightfully cheerful. Needless to say, they are polar opposites in almost every way, and this creates some entertaining moments. As far as the others, Togame's arch-rival, and somewhat villainous, Princess Hitei, and Shichika's tiny over-powered sister are standouts. But don't be fooled, by the end you'll learn some of these characters are not exactly who you think they are.

Enjoyment: 10
This is one of the few series I can legitimately say I enjoyed from start to finish. I usually get a bit restless sitting through 50 minute episodes, but that was not the case here. It looks and sounds beautiful, the fights are great, Shichika's ancient swordless fighting style is a cool gimmick, and the two main characters are such a fun duo. It was a joy to watch.

Overall: 9
The weak story is the only negative. It is perfection in every other area. This is a show that not nearly enough people have watched, as it is truly a (near) masterpiece.
