Review of Black Butler: Book of Circus
The book of circus is taken directly from the manga volumes 6-8 after the curry arc. The fanfic season 2 is retconned and we continue from season 1. EXCEPT! This is what Black Butler should have been, the quality of writing shows putting it leaps and bounds beyond anything from S1. Ciel is investigating a string of child kidnappings that coincide with the circus coming to town. This one is darker than you think so keep that warning in mind.There is one line that Sabastian utters that sums up his character. "This is part of the butler's aesthetic."
This isn't the static deus ex machina from the past season, this is a demon and he is VERY hungry. The "butler" mask is paper thin and he makes a joke of it, that it's his current "aesthetic" and nothing more.
Ciel also manages to get a personality, well, one that's layered and doesn't suck anyway. Because this is further in the manga you see his descent down a dark & ruthless path contrasted with his child exterior that he fully makes use of, complete with beautiful art and fluid animation.
Art & Animation = 9
Not only is this beautiful to watch but there are a few subtle shots in there to showcase their relationship and personality which adds another meaning to the event.
Character = 9
Unlike in S1 when something happens to someone it hits hard, even side characters that only had a line or two mange to punch you right in the feels. There is some character development and subtle power plays in motions making them feel more real.
Plot / Story = 10
This was a VERY dark tale but it was well written and executed.
Enjoyment = 8
While this one is my favorite from Black Butler so far it was very and I do mean VERY heavy.
Summery =
Sadly the show banks on you watching season 1 so it can't be treated as a standalone, otherwise it would have been perfect. If you did however then this is HIGHLY recommended.
