Review of Devilman: Crybaby

Let me start by saying this: if it's not obvious from my MAL, I ADORE anime and everything that it stands for, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's truly soul-crushing for me to have to hate on what I love. To be fair hate is an understatement, more like turning it to ash and disposing of it in the ocean. But it has to be done. Such a disgrace to humanity can not be left unscathed.This show was a complete and utter mess. From the story to the characters, to absolutely everything else. When watching this series, all the way through I was overcome with unbearable cringe and unbridled rage. I could have never imagined that anime from all things, could evoke such negative emotions within me.

I'll start with the plot since it was by far the worst part. Who thought it would be a good idea to not focus on the character-building or the story at all and instead just replace it with loads of sex and gore, which wasn't even fun to watch in the slightest, not only that but after not focusing on the characters at all, you just decide to kill them all off like they didn't have any significance in the first place. I can't wrap my head around it, why would you go the extra mile to introduce characters and somewhat try to make them seem important, but then just kill and forget about them in the blink of an eye. And all this is without even touching the complete dumpster fire that is the actual story. The bulk of the plot is severely overshadowed by loads of sex and violence happening on screen which don't leave much screen time for the story itself. But even if it hadn't done that, and focused on the story more, I don't think it would be any better. The whole concept is bland, it doesn't intrigue the viewer in any way. From start to finish it felt like there was no point to what was happening on screen.
As for the characters. there's not much to say, mostly because the show never put any effort into showing their backstory, creating their personality, or making them likable. The only scenes I can talk about are all the stupid and nonsensical decisions they keep making throughout the whole show. Which oh boy is there a lot of. For the sake of not completely spoiling the show and not making the review way too long, I'll refrain from listing every dumb decision they did.

Devilman: Crybaby was one of the worst experiences I ever had with anime. And it's really sad to have to say that. The plot was awful, the character building was horrendous, and the overall idea was bland. There's really not much else to say. Watch it if you want to feel rage and cringe you never felt towards a show before, or maybe you are one of the oddballs that are able to enjoy it.
