Review of Tsukigakirei
For starters if anyone ever told me I would be writing to get people to watch a middle school romance I would have my doubts . Before I praise this over the moon I would like to warn you that this can be be pretty boring . It lacks any real substance . A major part of the series is pretty everyday like which is boring and also one of the reasons the show is compelling . The 2 main characters are given everything to work with . The supporting cast don't do much but they have a strong purpose and set up the philosophical aspectsof the show nicely . The animation is pretty nice and the best thing about the show is probably the use of music . Every music used is a good fit for the running scene . The storytelling is so simple and yet so subtle . The quote references are very relatable and answer certain questions for you . The use of psychology was also something to behold .Adolescence was portrayed fairly well as well . The script was quite good and skipped the unnecessary generic lines which worked to sell the characters . However the direction in this series is where it deserves its main praise . Doing everything it can to sell the main characters and their awkward feelings . The supporting characters don't do much . But in reality their script plays a valuable role in telling us how middle schoolers have started to think and how their change in mentality affects one another . Tsuki ga kirei doesn't offer much when it comes to the thrills . Its rather about the artistic way everything was brought up . It can potentially change you as a person due to the subtle philosophical outlook that was presented in the show .
Wait wait wait I said it lacks substance . So why is this good ? I believe the message told here is the reality . Life doesn't have the substance we expect it to have . During Adolescence we have this strong desire to grow up fast . Not everything we do makes sense and thats how it is . But our feelings are something we can't change at will . Sometimes our curiosity leads us to experiment with our life and most of the time it hurts . But you do that because you look for something new , something strong enough to change you as a person . The answer to that in the show is 'love' . They use it to showcase the characters and their changes . The show tests the characters with different teenage obstacles and gives us a solution / better picture of a lot of things . The emotional side is strong and does its job although that is debatable . This is no fairy tale . Things are as close as it is in real life . The ending can be interpreted as a moral lesson as well . (no spoilers )
In short the series not only manages to capture the casual audience with a touching story , its philosophical representation and reality based writing is good enough to change your view / have a better concept on certain things . Then again art is so subjective and a writers way of presentation may not impress everyone . But when a show can do all those mentioned above you know it manages to do its job .
