Review of Steins;Gate 0
I loved the original Stiens gate, a friend recommended it to me and after watching one episode, I put aside all other plans I had at the moment and finished the series in one sitting. Stiens Gate 0 is set in an alternate future where Okabe does not save Kurisu and becomes incredibly depressed. It's meant to patch one of the plot points near the end of the original series and does that exceptionally well for the most part. That said it is kind of a sequel so watching the original series is required viewing before watching this. The story, for the most part, coversOkabe getting over his depression to so he can set in motion the steps to reach the real ending (i.e., the one in the original series). It full of twists and turns and I rather enjoyed the journey. Mind you I will say I was not as captivated with it as I was with the original series, but it was still enjoyable.
If I had to say my one problem with the series it how it handles the Mayuri; in the original series, Okabe and Mayuri seemed to have a familial love for each other, and I thought that was nice because what usually happens with the "childhood friend " trope is that it devolves into romantic love. Which in the original series their relationship stayed pretty much platonic and I thought that was a nice change of pace. In Zero, unfortunately, the show reverts her to that trope with her just being an unrequited love. I get that some people say the hints were there in the original series, but for me, I think that overall detracts from her character.
I watched the dub; it was terrific as it was in the original with most if not all of the original Voice actors returning. I would recommend it as the primary way to watch it.
That being said Stiens Gate 0 was still an enjoyable experience I would recommend watching.
