Review of No Game, No Life: Zero
While I rated the series an 8, I HAD to put a 9 somewhere. I enjoyed the series and could see it going far if it had continued, however it didn't call for a 9. But the movie is a whole other story. Taking place way before Sora and Shiro entered this world, we get to see the backstory. Or 'myth', as Tet calls it. I LOVE the way it's told from beginning to end. Starting with Tet in the middle of a game with Izuna, and ending with that, I couldn't help but want to cry towards the end. The detail with the storyblew me away. We get to see why Sora, Shiro and Steph are the main 3 and how the rules were put into place. I personally loved the backstory and it made me appreciate the main story 100x more than if I had never watched this movie.
I recommend watching this AFTER you watch the series, because all the pieces slowly fall into place throughout the duration of the movie. The pacing was okay. While the characters aren't properly fleshed out, they're decent for a movie this long. And while it wasn't exactly character driven, the plot is what makes me give it such a high rating.
Couldn't recommend this more if you enjoyed the series. Don't expect to see the same thing though, as the story is very different. Don't expect games or smart plays like in the series (though one does take place), remember, this takes place before this 'World of Games' gets created. The setting is entirely different. It was still enjoyable, especially towards the end.
