Kairaku no Rou · review
Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
Kairaku no Rou is a dystopian manga that takes place in a future where people buy and use robots. This manga is taken from the perspective of one of those robots, and we see through their eyes how everything goes down. It's a completely original and fresh manga, which I can definitely recommend reading (if you're 18+). SPOILERS WARNING. So let's break down Kairaku no Rou into simpler categories. World Building: 1 / 2 The world in this manga is taken from the perspective of a robot right out of the factory, so the fact the world doesn't have too much depth makes sense. However, there is still afeeling that there is a lot about the world that could be explained and give us more context into our current situation. However, it doesn't take away from the main premise of this story.
Characters: 1.5 / 2
The more I think about this manga, the more I like the characters. We are introduced to the flaws that humanity has and the absolute depravity it can cause. Since the main character is a robot, we can see how they treat it because it's evident they don't view it as anybody but just another thing to be replaced. Most importantly, we see the perspective of the robots who want nothing more than to get the approval of the 'Masters' they serve but never truly receive it. While there are definitely aspects to the character that should still be explored, it covers all of the necessary elements and does a great job of presenting them.
Plot: 1.5 / 2
Phenomenal plot; the only reason it's not perfect is it has glaring plot holes I would want to be addressed, but outside of that, it's a very thought-provoking manga. Every single chapter I would stop and really think about everything that's going on and how people treat other humans like this, much less a robot. The story behind this manga is close to a masterpiece.
Pacing: 1.5 / 2
The entire story flows perfectly from the start and then cuts off on the last chapter, unfortunately. The end of this manga, while necessary to get the point across, wrecks the pace of this manga that otherwise is quite captivating.
Bias: 1.5 / 2
Outside of the ending and some glaring plot holes, this is an absolute banger of a manga. It truly makes you think about the society that we live in and how it really looks like this might be the foreseeable future that we are heading towards. Truly a great work.
7 is perfect for this manga, as while it's missing some vital things, the story as a whole ties together quite well, and all the minor subcategories really complement each other.
