Persephonia · review
TLDR - It's not the best thing I've read, but if you want some bloody fights between supernatural high-school girls with a somewhat different story than go for it. Persephonia is a manga that on the surface comes off as really harsh and edgy, but truly has a soft spot in itself. The first few chapters are vaguely intriguing, building up to this large underlying concept, but sometimes, especially later on, it feels a little exposition heavy for my liking. One key factor that drives the whole story together is the romance aspect of it, our two little lovebirds have this large barrier to overcome ifthey want to make it work and our MMC has that lack of care that makes him so cool and mysterious. Our MMC is also cold and will stop at nothing to get his selfish desire, which is something I like rather than seeing some limp-wristed guy flounder. The FMC is a little more submissive in her role of the relationship but seeing her grow and adapt to the situation is nice since at least she is trying, however hard it may be. She also has a strong sense of justice, which is a reoccurring theme throughout.
The art is really solid, the only gripe I've had so far from the limited amount I've read is that the fight scene choreography is pretty limited and sometimes a little hard to follow. It's not super smooth, and the one real fight scene I've seen so far was really weird and kind of confusing. The actual stills however are pretty sick, one thing that may just be how I've been able to see it is that some of the gore is censored which is like whatever, just a little thing some people nitpick.
All in all it's simple with room to grow and become more complex down the line and I hope it takes that route since this seems like an interesting story with lots to tell.
I'd like to say it's a high 6, so I'm just going to round up to 7 for the benefit of this manga, since it's newer and is INCREDIBLY small on this site.
