Review of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc
*contains some spoilers.* I don't normally enjoy shounens but when I watched demon slayer season 1 I was hooked straight away! The animation was crisp and colourful, the story was enticing and thrilling with just enough drama to keep you wanting more and the characters were endearing if a little annoying. I couldn't wait to watch season 2. I actually binged it in one day. I was constantly at the edge of my seat and each episode ended on a cliffhanger which made me need to watch the next one instantly. This season our team are on a mission to find Hashira Tengen Uzui's 3 ninja wiveswho have gone missing in the entertainment district where the night is when everything comes alive, making it the perfect place for demons.
What I enjoyed about this season was the build up, every episode upped the ante and just when you thought it was over, BAM! There would be another twist, another surprise around the corner. This season was a constant high stakes adrenaline rush, you just had to find out what happened next.
The characters were their usual selves, Tanjiro was his kind hearted and determined self, Zenitsu was still a cry baby and Inosuke was over the top but not overly annoying. I personally loved the setting and history of the Oiran.
Tanjiro is still my favourite character even though he is basically a Mary Sue, there is just something so inspiring about his kindness and willingness to always do what is right which I think makes him a great role model for any young person watching the show.
The downside in this season was that the latter half was basically just one long fight scene that was narrated to you the whole time and felt never ending, yes it was tense and yes I did enjoy most of it but I found myself getting fed up. Just when you thought it was over, it wasn't and then you had to sit through dialogue, monologues and flashbacks but on the whole it was an enjoyable watch if you can get through the narration of every attack or tactic like an episode of yugioh.
What also brought the season down or even brings the show down itself is Zenitsus character. He's whining and scared one minute but then can make a 180 degree flip into a bad-ass which is so jarring and out of character. It comes off as bad writing. He spends the second half fighting while unconscious (which i prefer) but it MAKES NO SENSE!! I really hope this gets explained one day. I think because he is such a crybaby it makes his character not believable when he becomes serious and tough.
Ignoring the downsides demon slayer is enjoyable and though there are parts which are simplistic or even a little patronising it still holds your attention and is a worthwhile watch.
