Review of Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
Story: 9 I can understand why some viewers would consider the teasing as borderline bullying, but I personally enjoyed Nagatoro and Senpai's dynamics. Normally, I despise it when the kohai doesn't treat the senpai respectfully. However, this anime was executed so well, that I think the teasing was taken lightheartedly by both sides (the kohai and the senpai)- Evident in Nagatoro's constant blushing and sweating, suggesting that she's fallen for senpai at first sight, and it is a love that grows as the story progresses. Yes, the whole story's premise is based on how the kohai constantly teases the senpai for being a virgin and aloner, but it is also clear that both sides care for each other. If you want to enjoy this anime, take it with a grain of salt, and remember- this is fiction.
Art: 10
The art.. simply amazing. The lighting changes based on the mood of the scene, and it is rendered sooooo well! The character designs were also recognisable and memorable, it is also important to note how well done the expressions of each character are drawn. I think one of the biggest selling point of this anime for me was the art.
Sound: 7
Nothing too outstanding besides the opening. Sound effects were queued when the time is right, though!
Character: 8
Some could find the teasing of Nagatoro and her friends a little excessive, but imo it was all in good fun and it was what made the chemistry between the characters cute! It is also clear that Nagatoro knows where to draw the line, even if she does tease her senpai a lot. :) However, something I'm not as happy with is the fact that the senpai seems to not have a personal life besides Nagatoro and his art club- probably the point of the story as he is portrayed as the "sea louse loner", but I would love for his character to be given more depth and personality. Since this is only the first season, I gave the score for the characters an 8, not that much is wrong with them, but because I would love the characters to be a bit more developed in the following season(s).
Enjoyment: 10
Smiling through a whole show is rare for me.. As mentioned previously, I normally don't enjoy the whole tsundere/bully the one you love trope, so I hesitated to start this series. However, this was executed quite exceptionally, and it was a great balance of humour and romance.
