Review of Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms
Maybe I'm being too harsh but I don't think there's anything in this anime that's worth watching. There's no romance, no back n forth in the teasing game, the comedy is repetitive and one note AND most importantly the characters suck. Mona is a terrible protagonist, she is an insufferably shallow doted on princess that everyone loves. She is a pathetic character with no self respect, self reflection or change in personality; degrading herself just to satisfy her ego and get a reaction while spouting self aggrandising monologues. Pretty much everyone else in the show loves her and nothing changes except refreshing character introductions and hypocriticaldialogue.
The male lead Medaka is a nothing burger, I think we learn 3 things about the guy in 6 episodes that aren't one note reactions. He & is situation similar to the main character in TenPuru without any of that show’s redeeming qualities.
Asahi, another female character introduced in episode 5 is not much better but her addition was such a breath of fresh air to the Mona circlejerk. Her bluntness & change of pace improves the show while providing an outlet for change but sadly not much comes from it.
The premise sounds fun but sucks in execution with a copout explanation as to why our male lead is “impervious”. As a result of this copout there's an obvious question about communication that arises and the answer is simply that the male lead can't vocalise it otherwise the show would stop & not in the usual romcom way because he verbalises it to classmates.
As I mentioned before, Impervious to my Charms improves during episode 5 with the introduction of Asahi but despite the charm she provides & change up to the tedious status quo, you're still stuck with the unchanging grating lead character of Mona.
