Girl from Phantasia · review

This was a fun one. It's about a girl named Malon who comes to Earth from a world called Phantasia. We don't really know what her original world is like, and we only get vague clues at the start of the OVA as to what her conflict is. She's arguing with some other girls about the moral compass of humans; Malon is arguing that humans are compassionate, whereas her friends disagree, and that's when Malon comes to the human world. He then randomly pops up in the room of the male MC, Akihiro. If you're a genre savy anime watcherlike me, particular from pre millennium anime, there's going to be a lot here t hat you'll recognize. The cute girl randomly meeting the male MC and instantly becoming infatuated with him, Akihiro hating her and wanting her to go away even causing him to act harshly towards her, but later regretting his words, and the male MC being an over the top, unapologetic pervert. It has it all crushed down into a 25 minute OVA.
And yet, I somehow didn't hate it. It's not great, but it's not terrible either. Malon's interactions towards Akihiro aren't as overbearing and obnoxious as some other characters, especially the famous Lum from Urusei Yatsura, which the series was very obviously inspired by, but I still thought Akihiro's reaction to her was realistic and appropriate. Honestly, based on this OVA, I wouldn't have minded if it got a full series. As it stands it's painfully average, but not horrible. Either way it would have been considered a product of its time. It's not the best of the OVAs that I've been watching lately, but not the worst either.
