My First Girlfriend is a Gal

Review of My First Girlfriend is a Gal

5/10

If you're like me, you probably decided to watch this show purely because of the sexy kogal on the cover. Rest assured, she is easily the best girl of this show and is every bit as bad as you're expecting, I just gave this show a 5/10 because it doesn't really try that hard, and it's not particularly memorable outside of the beautiful black queen and the startling number of jokes about pedophilia. Those jokes, by the way, were probably the funniest part of this show and they only got funnier/more disturbing as the show went on. You wouldn't think a show about Gals would beso heavy with something so sickening and unrelated but I got some laughs out of it so I can't complain.

I can't complain about this show at all really, its perfectly fine as a background watch (occasionally looking up for the fanservice), it just doesn't do anything substantial with the potential it has. The comic relief boys who are friends with the MC are all tropes that have been done to death (and way better in Prison School I might add), but they still made me laugh plenty.

We have some fun setup with all the girls being tangentially related to the Gyaru lifestyle, and some really fun slang being used both in the Japanese and English dubs, but those aspects of the story peter out fairly quickly in service of some really generic romcom plots that are just okay at the end of the day. They get the job done and the finale pulled a heartstring or two, but still it was nothing to write home about.

My ideal version of this show would've gone a lot further into the Gyaru lifestyle and just featured a lot more of the girls doing badass Gyaru shit. I like how the heroine is considerate towards the nerdy MC, but still I will honestly probably forget most of this show in a year, sadly.

This seems like the type of show that walked so another great show could run, I just haven't found that show yet.
Due to all the midness, I would recommend watching a YouTube compilation of this show over watching the actual show, if anything. If you absolutely must watch it, don't torture yourself by reading subtitles, either get some japanese immersion like I did by going in raw if you're a japanese learner or put on the dub and let the vocal fry wash over you til you're golden brown.
