Review of My First Girlfriend is a Gal
Hajimete No Gal Saw the cover, started drooling all over myself. I mean, half-naked anime babes strewn all over pink lace satin bed sheets was definitely a crotch jerker for me. Seeing the harem tag below the show’s descripto didn’t help things either. By then I no longer needed the pump, I was ready for a night around the town, a soirée all to myself watching oppai’s galore…or so I thought. Make no mistake, there were titties (well sorta) …and sexuality played an important part in setting up the story. However, I felt like there was more to it than the obscenity that was running rampant throughout…Was Iwrong in thinking this harem actually tried dropping knowledge bombs on its viewership? And am I a blithering idiot for actually having learned something of value from watching this show? Let’s find out.
Firstly, I'd like to pay my respects towards the writers of the dub (yeah, I only watch dubs…wanna fight about it?). The dialogues (and monos) are good…like really good! Heck! The artistic value of what’s been scripted for this show is superb. I didn’t cough up a lung whilst watching this…but that’s only because I had passed out from laughing so hard before that were to happen. Not only was it a blast to see Funi’s best showmen being put to work on this one…but it was also refreshing to catch up on the latest memes, tropes, troll baits…and best of all: Freaking Yoda Impersonations!!…like what the Ef!?! Simply Glorious. It’s like the show packed all its humour into a tiny little brief-case: here you are expecting for a disaster to happen but…to everyone’s surprise, it fits.
Now don’t go thinking this show is a roller-coaster ride to funsville from beginning to end. It has its serious moments. And by serious, I mean enough to kick you in the feels…several times over. It’s this combination of both humour and earnestness that got me to consider this show without at least a couple shots of vodka in me…I’m taking a harem show seriously boiz!…someone needs to stop me now.
But no really, the delivery behind every single scene was well-crafted; granted episodes 7 and 8 were starting to annoy me, the show nicely concludes thereafter, giving this impression that the story was based around core values that simply worked for it.
I’m a virgin…and this show made me say it out loud on MAL. In effect, the series tries teaching, or at least showcasing, the importance in having self-confidence, so that one can, in turn, confide in others. Moreover, by playing with concepts such as “Losers” and “Winners”, or, as the show puts it, “Alphas” and “Beta Cucks”, we get to see Hajimete No Gal elaborate on much of what is going on today…in the real world (yup, THAT wretched thing).
