Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
[THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS] So a few weeks ago, my cousin wanted to watch Parasyte with me. I already had completed it a while back and my first impression was it wasn’t that good at all, in fact it was really forgettable. Regards of my first impression, I tried to have an open mind and decided to rewatch it in cased I missed something, or maybe I'll enjoy it more when I watch for a second time. Fun fact about me, but I actually enjoy watching shows more for the second time than the first time, with a few exceptions. But I'm getting off topic. So after watching it for a second time, we couldn’t finish it. I enjoyed it less when watching it for a second time and my cousin didn't enjoy watching it for the first time. We watched half of the show before deciding to give up on it. we both came to the conclusions that it was washed away into an unoriginal, unexciting show.
Parasyte had all the potential to bring something new to the table. What could have made Parasyte a much more interesting show is if they touched on the sci-fi or the philosophy more. See, there aren’t that many anime, or at least what I’m aware of, that touch on the medical side when it comes to sci-fi. They only mentioned it in passing when trying to come up with ways to kill the parasite but it’s never brought up again. They could have incorporated it by doing more experimentations and add It more in dialogue, so it could help with the message the show was trying to give of humans hurting others for the sake of themselves. The few times the show executes this perfectly is the scene where Tamiya Ryouko gets shot and raises the long unanswered question; what's the purpose of life? and why were we born? If this was asked throughout the whole show, I would have enjoyed it more and would have rated it higher.
They could have touched on that a lot more throughout the whole show, but instead they only mentioned it throughout the end? And in a few lines and scenes? It just felt so out of place and they just squeezed a deep theme in last minute, which didn’t deliver the message that well. They could have played with the horror aspect of the show also, since the few episodes was filled with so much unknown, helping with this theme the show poorly delivered, but all of that was thrown out of the way and instead, they went with mediocre gore fights that turn it into a basic shounen.
