Review of Devilman: Crybaby
A review I wrote when devilman crybaby first aired, decided to post it here because why not. Compared to 2017 and 2018 anime that have aired, Devilman is something that is "unique." You know, rather than trying to adapt 100% faithfully from the original, or trying to use CGI, cheap anime tropes. boring shows that aren't very different from each other, the producers of devilman have tried some creative liberties. I think you know a lot more than I about the kind of 'surrealness' of the artstyle/animation they try to put forward.Of course, Devilman is not a work of art. I'd say it's like FLCL. You know, on one point, its a convoluted mess of plot points, character development, and overall sloppiness of writing, but on another hand, it's kind of interesting in its own way. Overuse of gore, violence, and other cliche ways of trying to draw sympathy for the MC. Perhaps all of the characters are sort of a foil. If they don't, their character is a bit of a mess, like all of them have bipolar disorder. 180 degree turn of personalities, and whatnot. Writing it off as insanity/devil possession is just a way to brush off the issue. A lot of timeskips (due to not enough screentime I imagine), and other rushed plot. It feels like one episode could be at least 5, and the worst part is that devilman crybaby tries to put everything into one package. School life, sometimes humor, romance, slice of life in one episode, and the other is MC questioning life itself and killing devils and many humans dying. This kind of juxtaposition sucks, and no one likes it. Don't bite off more than you can chew. You know, rather than spend like 50% of the screentime to the runner girl, why not dedicate it more to the rapper gang or whatever? Like miko, the girl that's the spider devil who hangs out with the guy who brings her to the party and transforms her into the devil, what the hell happen to him? Anyways...
From one way, it could be a steaming pile of shit, and another way, it could be just the right thing people like. And obviously, there's the motifs of god, morality, and whatnot. Dark and light, symbolism blah blah blah. Of course, THE MAIN POINT IS THAT IT GOT MY HEART PUMPIN? Shows are meant for enjoyment, and I think that although devilman has a lot of flaws, it was a good adrenaline rush that you usually don't get from other shows. TLDR: pretty unique for the shows that are airing, and although with flaws, still quite enjoyable
