Review of Devilman: Crybaby
*SPOILERS - SKIP TO END FOR NO SPOILERS* ahh, where do I even begin with this anime? Let's start with the few cons I have with this anime... First of all, lets get out of the way... The biggest con I have with this anime is how unnecessarily sexual it is. There is about only 1 episode that doesn't have some titties out. If they got rid of the sexual parts in this anime, I probably would've enjoyed it much more. It was just useless and gross. It added nothing to the story and was just erotic for the sake of being erotic. Another con is howfast the story goes. The beginning and the ending were really really fast and things escalated quite quickly. I feel like they should of made the anime at least a few episodes longer with more details instead of just speeding through some parts. For example, the fight between the demons and the devilmen felt very very quick. It may just be because I'm much more used to the shounen animes where fights last a lifetime, but I just felt uneasy with how short it was. Although I don't like many fights that last 3-5 episodes, I find that it should of lasted at least one full episode to get all the details and climax of the fight clearly seen by the viewer.
Now...lets get to the things I enjoyed about this anime.
First of all, lets talk about the story. At first I was so confused with the story line but when the real *war* began, I was really into it. I loved the apocalypse theme nearing the end of the anime. The story was well written and the development was done pretty well for an anime with only 10 episodes. The story also leaves a little bit of mystery to its purpose for the watcher to discover themselves, which I especially love.
The characters were interesting. The relationships between these characters were also very interesting. Two in particular are the ones that stand out the most: Akira & Ryo and Akira & Miki. These relationships are well developed and I loved seeing the backstories of these characters.
Now, lets talk about the roller coaster of emotions this show gave me. Two scenes made me feel really empty inside and they include the two relationships that I named earlier; Miki's death and of course, the ending.
Miki's death hurt me. Seeing her run away made me feel something very weird and uneasy. Seeing her get stabbed just felt so depressing and it hurt even more seeing Akira find her dead body being pieced by sticks and held up in protest. This point was when Akira gave up completely on humanity, the thing he was fighting for. At end of episode 9 after the credits, it cuts to Akira and Miki riding on a motorcycle by the sunset which is the dream they never got to have
The ending hurt me even more. Ryo just talking to Akira's dead body wanting to be alive while the rest of the world is all dead. They are left alone with the world crumbling around them and its just so depressing.
There's many more things I love about this show but I'd be typing for hours if I was able to say every thought I have.
*NO SPOILERS*
I'd recommend this anime who likes quick paced psychological fiction animes with lots of emotion. Oh and just a warning; don't watch this if you don't like nudity, sex, drugs or gore. And make sure to have a box of tissues by your side.
