Review of Ping Pong the Animation
To be honest, I binged Ping Pong because it was only 11 episodes long. At first, I was a little put off by the animation, but I got used to it (like Akagi and the weird noses?). I wouldn't really call this a drama, as it's not that intense. Sports anime shows what each opponent is thinking, which makes me feel like I'm there too. It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. There weren't cliff-hangers. But it was interesting and entertaining nonetheless. The thing I really liked about Ping Pong was the music composition. It's different, kind of like a techno beator an 80's synth track. It fits the animation, like at the dramatic parts and the animation style. The OP and END were also a good fit.
Character development was also good. The characters weren't overly complicated or 'damaged'. They didn't have intense resentment/bitterness had made them hateful. There weren't any players/opponents with flashy moves or superhuman strength (like some other sports anime) because ping pong itself is a really fast-paced game. By the end, they all sort of attain their own personal goals, even though the path was long and winded.
Ping Pong wasn't over complicated. It was simple, it was something different in terms of animation style, and it made something simple into something really interesting (I think that's more on the character development side). All in all, it was a good watch.
