I'll Save This Damned Family! · review
Plot FL wakes up as the fat daughter Tara Elias in a boring unfinished novel written by her friend. She knows that one of her siblings will commit treason and the Elias family will be killed. To avoid the bad ending and protect her family, she decides to work hard to become a close aide of ML, the second prince and MC of novel. Review This series gets some things right. * FL takes a while to get her body in shape and we get to see her slow journey of exercise and diet. She has a successful career and works hard to improve herself. She alsogets a lot of support from other characters (including ML). Her growth is one of the main reasons to like this series.
* The romance is a slow-burn, and the first 100 chapters basically don't have any romance at all. The relationship between ML and FL is a long journey, and we see it evolve a lot over the course of time.
* The characters act mature and communicate. For an otome isekai, there's surprisingly little drama. FL also knows her limits and doesn't try to help/save everyone. She's just busy with save her own family.
* I love some of the side cast and their humor. Neils (works for FL), Nick (works for ML), emperor, FL's father etc.. are fun to watch.
The series also gets plenty of things wrong.
* The conversations in particular feel long, dry and boring. You can skip about 5 pages of dialogue and not miss anything. The characters say really obvious things, and none of them are charming enough to keep me interested in their conversations.
* Romance makes the characters weak. We used to have this strong axe wielding FL with her own motivations, but after the confession, her entire life revolves around ML and his romantic intentions.
* The quality goes down after the confession. We focused on politics and FL's growth at first. After confession, cliche romance becomes a priority. Towards the climax of season 2, we suddenly have "Aura" (wtf???) like a martial arts manhwa.
* The bad guys are incompetent. The other princes, empress, FL's stepmom etc.. act dumb and self-centered. None of them feel threatening.
* Side characters just get ignored. FL's knight, FL's sister, ML's cousin, FL's maids/servants/mother, etc.. are all decent characters, but they rarely get to do much in the story. In a way, the narration feels artificial, as we only care about characters when they are plot-relevant (or interacting with FL/ML). It doesn't feel like the world is alive and people are living their lives in the background.
* There's a big change in art style after a while. But, I never cared for the art style of this series, so it did not bother me.
Overall
This is a good series with a unique strong FL and an interesting relationship with ML. But if you are looking for romance, you will be waiting a loooooooooong time. Due to the shortcomings that I listed, there will be plenty of people who won't like this series. I would recommend reading until chapter 15 (where FL and ML meet) and see if you like the character interactions.
