Dogs and the Brave Are Not Showy · review
8.3/10 Ah, reverse-isekai hero stories, where would I be in life without them... This trope is seriously my guilty pleasure, and I don't care how crappy a story is, I end up enjoying it. However, this does mean that 99% of these "Hero returns to ___" stories have the writing and storytelling of an elementary schooler. As for this manga? Nah. It's different. This is genuine peak, and that's not my bias speaking (okay, partly). I initially thought this manga would take the "comedy" route by belittling everything, but I was not expecting what this author was cooking. To start, everything about this manga was so... HYPE.The buildups are crazy, and every character gets just enough rage-bait to make you hate them, but they get developed later on -- this comes with the signature one-to-one apology/venting scenes too. Genuine peak for my cliche taste.
Briefly covered the side characters, but most of them are decently well-written with some surprising elements here and there. It's too early to say that ALL the female characters don't like the main character, but most of their love comes naturally. Thougyh, there are still a lot of those frustrating face-palm scenes, which I don't mind too much since the MC technically has the emotional maturity of an elementary schooler.
The last thing I want to mention is the art. Oh, it's beautiful. I immediately recognized the artist from a trashy romcom manga I read (and completed) quite a while back, as the FMC was a 1:1 replica. It was quite literally a "what the fuck are you doing here" type of situation, and I honestly didn't have too high hopes since this manga was an entirely different genre. But man... Did I eat my words. Some of the fight scenes (especially in chapter 17) made me wonder, IS THIS THE MOTHERF*CKING GOAT MURATA DRAWING?!? This art is simply beautiful, and it conveys the stories' moments so well.
This is a well-written but slow-moving "return to earth" type of story. The MC doesn't immediately reveal his power and showboat, nor does he act arrogantly. He's one of those "I want to live a slow life" type of mofos, but the story isn't done in a boring way at all. It's definitely not a story for aura-farming enjoyers, as there certainly are badass scenes, but it comes after the MC gets belittled by everyone for 5-10 chapters.
