JK x Teacher · review
I'm slightly surprised at the relatively low rating this manga has. I approached it with hesitation, fully expecting to drop it in a few chapters, just to continue reading pleasantly surprised. Sure, it has its shortcomings (to be discussed below), but it still is a solid 7-7.5/10 series. So, onto the main selling points of why it's good: 1) ART Marvelous. The shading, the thicker lines of the artstyle, the very expressive foreground (characters, their facial expressions etc.) vs the slightly toned-down backgrounds...The artstyle here is very specific and I haven't seen many other series emulate this kind of mood/feeling. The contrast between the deadpan/stone-faced teacher and the overly expressivestudents is also very well-done.
2) PLOT
Were it just your usual semi-coherent smut featuring some taboo (read: immoral/unethical) relationships, I'd have dropped this in two chapters in at most.
Luckily, the author shifts the tone and focuses on heavier emotional impact, character background (to flesh out everybody's personalities better) and darker undertones.
While that's a plus for me, I can see why others who came here for comedy/ecchi would be disappointed. Ultimately this will be the dividing line between liking the series or just putting a 'meh' stamp on it.
WHAT COULD BE BETTER
That said, I didn't like how it all wrapped up. You'll find out for yourself, and I can see why many people would be stoked for how the series reaches the finish line...But for me it was a bit too convenient of a copout. From various angles - both storyline-related, and ambiguous from a purely moral viewpoint.
Additionally, some of the chapters were too short/filler-y, which is a big no-no for a series that short. Luckily, they don't detract too much of the pacing/overall mood - but I still wish they were longer/more packed with something of value.
All in all, though, this was a series that exceeded my expectations. Considering you have only 30 chapters to go through, I highly recommend you blaze through 'Joshikousei to Seishokusha-san' in 2-3 hours of reading. A commendable debut from the mangaka, for sure.
