Review of BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.
This show is innocent, cute, friendly, short, and playful. If you're in the mood for a short show about a female protagonist joining a VR game (not unlike SAO) and get very overpowered and go through all sorts of adventures with her friends, look no further! It's almost sickeningly sweet. :P I certainly had fun watching it. I actually really like the main character, even though she's a so-called flat character, and everyone and everything is perfect and friendly with no conflict. I''ll tell more about why I liked it in a moment, but first a few big BUTS! - The character is ridiculously overpowered for silly reasons. It's not even a contest, really. Some good fights get built up, and it is kinda nice, but in the end, the plot armor still wins easily.
- The ending was a bit rushed. They were in the middle of an event, then realized there was only 10m left until the show ended, so they suddenly narrate through the end, after party, epilogue, done! It was a bit too sudden for my liking.
- I don't like the, eh, main premise. It's highly unrealistic I think. If there was a game that was this easy to break, everyone would be rolling that class and break the game, and it wouldn't just be the main character who's OP. Also, people would complain, and the devs would have to nerf or change it, or risk losing the player base.
But, if that doesn't scare you off, you're in for a treat I think!
Other than how sweet and lovable it is, I like the episodic approach and watching them make friends and go on adventures together.
I like how they show that grinding exists, but speed through it with nice music and montage.
I like how they're using actual game mechanics and show things like HP, MP, Strength, Vitality, skills, etc, and reference them. They have a system, and it makes sense in its setting, even though it's unbalanced.
I like the world (very SAO style, but ofc friendlier).
I like the continuous events, where each of them have a new minigame. All-out brawl, capture the flag, gathering cows, and more!
I like they show the developers actively discussing about the game and the main character, and whether or not to nerf her.
I like that NPCs are actually limited in what they can do.
I like that they show RL every now and then, and how gaming affects them - though I wish they'd shown more.
And overall it was just good music, good animation, and more importantly, good fun! ^_^
