Despair of the Monster · review
This is an incredibly sad short film about the impossibility of belonging in a society that will never accept your existence as you truly are. It's frequently described as a horror anime, but if you're looking for scares or gore this short film won't offer any of that. It will, however, probably make you pause for a bit and consider what you just experienced. I really appreciated that the whole creative team behind this story committed to a very specific vision, one that isn't likely to appeal to a broad audience. The music is simple but evocative, and it complements the melancholy story quite well.I'm glad I took a chance on this.
I will, however, say that the animation is woefully subpar on every level. Please don't let that dissuade you from giving the movie a chance. I would, however, say that I would have increased my score if it didn't look so cheaply done. That being said, I hope that the people who worked on this get much better funding in the future. They deserve it.
