Review of Kakushigoto
I love the 12 episode comedy series that come out every season, but I have never loved one this much. The show draws you in with an original funny premise, a dad who tries to hide that he is a semi-famous manga artist, but soon you fall in love with what truly makes this show special. This goes above the normal comedy series in so many ways, the fantastic side characters who all add something to the show, the fantastically paced emotional beats that keep you wanting answers, but more than anything else the relationship between Hime and her dad. That relationship is what makes theshow, I have never seen the love a parent has for a child so perfectly shown than in this show. Everything Goto does is for Hime and you understand that all he wants is for her to have the best life possible. It wraps the whole show in this blanket of wholesomeness and warmth. I love shows that after you finish them you become sad because you know there is no anime out there that will give you this feeling as strongly, and this show has that.
The comedy of this show is hard to speak to because of how much people's tastes vary, but to me, the show had a brilliant combination of situational comedy and slapstick. The show also has a very good way of baking the comedy into the plot so it doesn't feel like the show shifts between plot and comedy, but instead, it's all mixed together which gives a feeling of flow that other shows lack. I cannot speak for anyone else but I frequently found myself laughing out loud several times an episode and I cannot give higher praise than that.
Those things on top of the fantastic artwork that gives the show a distinct style. You know a show is fantastic when your biggest complaint is that the music, outside of the perfect opening and ending, could be slightly more memorable.
Watching this show weekly made me worry that the ending wouldn't be very satisfying. That is usually my main complaint with most comedy series, but this delivered then delivered on the final episode. I almost cried for 20 minutes straight during the last episode because of how truly beautiful it was.
I love this show and I would recommend it to anyone because this really is special.
