Marika-chan to Yasashii Koi no Dorei · review
A rather clichéd smutty shoujo with some quasi-josei elements thrown in. While nothing groundbreaking and even frustrating at times, it ends up being decent if you're in the mood for something messy & steamy. The series will be hair-pulling levels of irksome for those who are easily frustrated by stalled conflicts with an obvious resolution. That said, I have to commend the manga for two things: 1) Despite its short run, it manages to dig a bit deeper into the main conflict's past with a level-headed, critical take. Many age-gap manga (and especially the shoujo kind) excuse too much when it comes to the unethical sidesof relationships. This one takes a closer, scrutinizing look through the lens of the main culprit/perpetrator a.k.a. the older lead.
A significant part of the main conflict stalling is rooted exactly in this part-done-well factor. Unfortunately, the author extends the resolution part to irritating levels of cluelessness.
2) The art is great. The backgrounds are lackluster in most cases. However, the characters, their expressions, their clothing, and accessories -- everything's drawn pretty neatly. The steamy parts are properly steamy too - neither over the top nor too timid. I'd call it a more mature shoujo art style, hence the shoujo-with-quasi-josei-elements classification I mentioned before.
(And I've gotta give props to the author - some of the comedy/goofy faces they draw are hilarious!)
Downsides include the clichéd nature and the lack of any meaningful side characters. The latter is excusable for a series that's dozen-or-so chapters, I guess. I've still seen short manga deal with the side character cast in a way better way; it's way too boring here.
If you're into the mood for some misunderstandings, smutty moments, and decent art - this is your jam. If you're looking for something more serious and deeper, look elsewhere.
6/10.
