The Treasure of the King and the Cat · review

Ou to Neko no Hihou is a light, short adventure and nothing more. The art is consistent and the four main characters make an interesting group. Castio is a shy but benevolent and sefless young king; Nios is his loyal duke who only worries about Castio's safety; O'Feuille is a wise and serious sorcerer; and Volks is his bubbly "sidekick" of sorts. Their little adventure to solve the serial disappearances is funny and clever but the manga falls short on most other aspects. It doesn't really have much of a love story, which is not necessarily a problem, since it's very clear which characters have feelingsfor each other, but it has a lot of very interesting topics brought up that were never explored at all, such as Volks' origins and powers, O'Feuille's friendship with the old king and how Castio's and Nios' childhood came along.

Overall, it's a light read but the humor, mainly coming from Volks, can feel a bit distasteful at times and the plot, as well as the relationship between the characters, are nothing to write home about, despite being well executed.
