Orb: On the Movements of the Earth · review
Orb. On The Movement of The Earth is a very enjoyable manga and a great experience. The story itself is not a jaw dropping masterpiece, it’s just okay, but the themes explored during these 62 chapters make up for it tenfolds. I love the way their mangaka was able to depict the time period and area in which the story was set and the way people from multiple parts of the society at that time and place are represented with their hardships and challenges. The characters personalities themselves were for me hard to cling on to, but the way their ideals and philosophies were portrayedwas amazing. The philosophical ideas in this manga is what elevates it from being just another “mid” story.
I think the best character this is seen with is the stories antagonist. Throughout his arc we get to know him as a person and his motivations and we start to be able to sympathise with him even though we’re still “against” him so to speak. I ended up hoping there was a way where he also could get his own happy ending.
There are a few double page spreads that are stunning in here, but the art as a whole is just okay, nothing to write home about.
If only for the philospies and the setting of this story, it would have gotten a 9/10 or even a 10/10 in my book. But the story itself being just subpar brings it down a bit for me, ending up with a 7.
It’s still a great reading experience. If you’re only interested in plot and characters, this might not be for you, but if you like philosophical stories, I recommend at least giving Orb a chance!
