I'm not well-versed in the shounen-ai genre or anything of the sort. In fact, I'm a noob when it comes to watching anime and I feel I haven't watched enough of this media to truly understand what's good from bad. With that being said, I stand firm in believing that Given is one of my favorites. As a gay male who didn't grow up with much representation or exposure to gay culture other than content of sexual nature/tendencies, this anime surprised me and felt like such a breath of fresh air to me. It depicts homosexuality and romance in general in a realistic and groundedway. It doesn't drown itself in fan service or show physical intimacy every chance it gets; it's one of those shows that instead opts to do the exact opposite. The relationships that are built are not instantaneous and are for the most part, a slow progression. It feels like something that could happen in reality, and I love that. I hate the stigma around BL anime (even though it's understandable) and I'm glad there's at least one mainstream show (I'm aware Banana Fish exists, I will get to that) that represents the LGBT+ in a non-creepy, weird way.

Apart from the actual storyline, another aspect I really liked was the simplistic art style of the characters paired with the striking modernity and bright lit nature of the background. I think I'm coming off as very convoluted right now, but that's the best I could sum up my thoughts. Whenever I watch it, everything feels so light and bright. Even the darker moments of the show, whether it be at night or in reference to the plot, there's a sense of beauty and constant atmosphere and mood. The animation studio did a great job in that regard. People have talked about the CGI, and I can see how it could bother purists out there, but frankly, I didn't mind it too much. The voice acting, particularly Uenoyama's voice actor, did amazingly. Seriously, it was good.

Last, but definitely not least: the OST. Apart from the big main song, I didn't notice that much music during episodes. At least anything worth noting. The opening and ending songs are incredible, and the Gift album under the Given band name is just *mwah*. I hope they sprinkle more sad piano during intimate scenes; not because it's necessary at all, but because it gets to me personally.

As my first proper anime review, it feels right to start with this. I hope when we get a second season, we get to experience even more of this amazing world with beautiful, flawed characters. I want to see what more Given has to offer; as a gay anime, a romance anime, a musical anime, and just as an anime in general. Also, I think a main female character would be a nice addition. Not sure why I think that but... Mafuyama all the way! <3
