Hetalia: The World Twinkle · review
So I just finished Hetalia: World Twinkle. Is it bad? No. Is it good? Eh... It’s probably one of the weaker seasons, to be honest. It still has that classic Hetalia charm, but it really feels like the series is just going through the motions here. Animation: 6.88 It’s... fine. Definitely a step up from the super early seasons, but after coming off of The Beautiful World, this feels like a noticeable downgrade. You can tell the budget took a hit—characters look a bit stiff sometimes, and there are moments where they definitely go off-model. It doesn’t ruin the show, but it’s kind of a bummer. Story: 6.10 Ifyou want the actual meat of this season, go read the manga. The anime feels super surface-level in comparison. Early Hetalia was great because it was edgy, unapologetically politically incorrect, and made hilarious historical parodies. World Twinkle feels totally tamed. The jokes rely way too heavily on the same old cultural quirks that have been done to death already, and the humor gets stale fast. They also mostly dropped the segmented storytelling, which really kills the comedic variety. Also, the finale was just super random and unfunny.
That being said, there are a few bright spots. Russia’s episode and the Micronation arc (Molossia is gold) actually manage to capture that chaotic energy the series is known for. I also liked the WWII Africa bits, the Nordics, Canada’s episode, and Germany’s origins. They just don't hit as hard as the iconic moments from the older seasons.
Sound: 6.14
The VAs are still carrying the show hard, as usual. But the soundtrack? Yikes, sometimes it completely misses the mark. The biggest offender is the Davie episode. Without spoiling too much, it’s an episode that should be emotional, but the BGM they picked was so wildly mismatched that it totally killed the mood.
Characters: 6.39
This is the curse of the 5-minute episode format. Because they try to cram so many characters in, it just feels scattered. The main cast (Italy, Germany, Japan, and the Allies) is basically sidelined. Russia is definitely the MVP this season, and the Micronations were a surprisingly fun addition. The Nordics are cool, but definitely needed way more screentime to actually be interesting.
Enjoyment: 6.65
Look, I didn't hate watching it. It’s still cute and passable if you just want some background noise or a quick laugh. But it lacks the sharp writing that made me fall in love with Hetalia in the first place. It really does nothing to attract new fans. If you're a longtime fan, you'll get some mild entertainment out of it. If you're a newcomer, skip this and go watch the first couple of seasons.
Overall: 6.43
TL;DR: An okay season, but definitely one of the weakest. The humor feels repetitive and tame compared to the manga and older seasons. Animation took a slight hit from The Beautiful World, and the BGM choice in the Davie episode is genuinely baffling. Only really worth watching for the Russia and Micronation episodes. Existing fans might enjoy it, but newcomers should look elsewhere.
