Review of Akira
Neon Genesis Evangelion? A classic anime movie. Immediately I was immersed into the dystopian Japan in 2019 where most people live in rag and chaos. The animation did a great job portraying the condition as well as the violence. Our main character was part of a bike gang, and the special animation of the bikes and chases at the beginning were electrifying and fun. Also, the music was unique and set up the strange and grim atmosphere of the dystopian world. The story was quite complexed. There were political commentary, discussion on human condition, and biblical allegory. Although not as grand-scale as NGE, this movie wasstill as ambitious and a surreal experience. Of course, there were many details that I’m sure that I missed, but the main message was still strong and impactful.
As for problems, I think the main character wasn’t interesting, and he’s only there acting like the audience. I wanted him to have more purpose.
Overall, a great and ambitious movie. 8.5-9/10
