Review of Steins;Gate 0
Steins Gate being one of my favorite series, I have to start off with this: this anime adaptation of the visual novel definetely improves on some parts, but also makes some story bits worse by cutting out or not showing relevant scenes. The story itself is fairly good for the most part, with the 2nd half being noticeably weaker and the finale of the 2nd half ruining my suspension of disbelief, although that also happened in the VN, it felt much less realistic in complete motion and such. The trauma and loss Okabe experiences is depicted in a way that really makes you feel for him and ithonestly hurts seeing him suffer, especially with the "amadeus AI" making it worse for him.
The story of episode 8 are an improvement on the VN, where the conversation and interactions between 2 characters only takes place in the lab, while the anime spends some more time on the scene fleshing it out, but in turn making it more emotional and important.
The music is still incredible and if you liked our cast in steins gate you'll most likely enjoy having them back in steins gate 0.
The additions of amane, the professor and legal loli short girl are quite entertaining.
All in all it's an accepteable show as an adaptation, it's very good in it's own right as a standalone, but has it's flaws. For a steins gate fan, probably a must watch, but for the full experience the VN is necessary.
On the VN though: people say it's a game, but for 99% it's not. It's still a novel, a book, with minor chances to interact with things like a game and you cannot tell what your choices do beforehand.
Can I recommend the VN? I dunno do you have hours upon hours of time to read? Do you enjoy VNs in general? Do you like branching stories that have bad endings?
Answer those and youll figure it out.
