Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
I seem to see a lot of hate, dislike, or mistrust of this series online (other than the high rating I see on MAL). Honestly I'm not sure why. I'll try to specify what I like about it, but needless to say I was extremely impressed with this series. First and foremost, I enjoy the characterization that happens for both main and side characters throughout the series. The background of each and every character, no matter how major or minor, directly impacts their actions and motivations in a way many shows fail to captivate nowadays. You'll have what amount to almost Lovecraftian horror stories that acta specific way as a result of their suffering, to loveable families hit by both tragedy and fortune affecting how they talk to the main character. The show does well to avoid any "good or bad" narrative to show "good people in bad situations" and "bad people who have the chance to do good". Past this there are also "neutral" characters who are neither good or bad, yet simply have ulterior motives. I found myself welling up with tears even at stories focusing on side characters through the sheer ability of the writers to make you develop a connection over a short period of time (If you don't tear up during the dog episode you're a heartless bastard).
This is all supported by great music, sound, and art designs. The music came swooping in at great moments, and while not as notable as "Made in Abyss" it definitely could bring out the character in scenes. The natural sounds (thus the connection of mages to nature) were absolutely on point, and really brought some nice scene setting depth to each frame. Finally, the art style of historical European fantasy in the modern day vibed really well with the flowing English countryside and the creatures encountered each episode.
While the series isn't perfect, I felt intricately connected to the characters and setting of the show. I really hope they make a season 2, and that this isn't just a tie in for the manga. However, they left me satisfied at the end, which is more to say than a lot of manga "ads". I would recommend this to anyone who has any affinity to European anime settings, fantasy settings, as well as those who like a good romantic story of two people who have to learn to overcome each other's issues in a situation that's not exactly normal.
