I really, really enjoyed this series. It started off looking fantastic, that was my original draw into the show. If you want something that constantly just looks amazing, then this is it. It also has a fine-tuned soundtrack to go along with the show. The entire time watching Astra it felt like I was watching something cinematic. It was animated in widescreen & had an accompanying soundtrack that flowed with each scene. It felt more like a long movie that was converted to a series. Which was awesome. Another good aspect of the show is how diverse the characters are in the show. They allblend well and bounce off each other in a way that felt natural. And, most importantly, the more you watch the more you will be enthralled at the mystery/thriller aspect of the show. It blends murder-mystery, with suspense, and a good hint of nail-biting thriller. I will say this, the show will keep you guessing. And I don’t think I ever guessed right, there were small twists and turns that impressed me.
The character development was impressive, in my opinion. They really made me as the audience think about each character and their motivations, which were always called into questioning. There was never really a time you totally understand any character but Kanata (Josh Grelle) or Aries (Megan Shipman).
I really don’t have anything negative to say about the show. There are some minor pacing issues, like with most things. I think I’m just hard to please. Some of the show felt rushed, rather than spend ½-3/4 of an episode on a planet before moving on maybe spend 2 episodes fully fleshing out the planets. Sure 12 episodes is easier to direct/animate than ~20 episodes, but I feel that the entire project with the same production quality would only benefit from the extra time spent in their universe. Maybe that’s just because I didn’t want it to end so quickly.
The show is well made, it felt like time and effort was put into the show. And because it was a mini-series it gives off the cinematic vibes. If you’re into any kind of sci-fi, thriller, suspense type of show then Astra Lost in Space is your show. It is one of very few that have made me want more than what they gave. Very solid show, one I know I will have to re-visit sometime later down the line.
