Review of High School DxD
Hello! This is Shiru, your favourite anime expert. I honestly believe this series is extremely underrated due to the fact that is an "ecchi" and "harem" series which automatically makes it receive low reviews from the so-called "anime elitists" that wouldn't know what a great series is even if it would hit them in the face. I must warn you before reading the rest of the review that it might contain SPOILERS (since, afterall, it is a review of what happened in the anime). Without further ado, let's get to this: Story: 9/10 The plot of the series is actually way more complex and philosophical than meets the eye. This is partially due to the fact that most people are focused on the fan-service part of the anime (which isn't really a bad thing since the end purpose of any anime is to enjoy it).
The show is basically tells the story of Hiyodou Issei, a fine young gentleman in his quest to reach the peak of perversion, a seemingly unreachable dream for many. Although he is seen as a "pervert" and nothing more, he is actually a man of integrity and is diligent in reaching his dream: even though he started from a disadvantageous position and knows that what he wishes for is impossible, he doesn't give up and continues to strive for that ideal. No matter what hardship he faces, he still goes all-out, no matter how strong are his opponents he keeps fighting. The "boobs" that he wants so much to feel in this anime are actually a metaphor for any goal in life, the weight of breasts being the weight of life and the pressures that everyday person has to face in their life's path.
Besides the "main plot" previously mentioned, there are also other things that need to be pointed out :
-The story makes use of different mythologies (dragons, devils, angels, fallen angels) with even more mythologies being added in thee following seasons. This creates a diversity in cast and events.
-Devils are not inherently evil. Sure, some of them have ambitions and wish for the destruction of their enemies but most of them just live lives similar to humans. In fact, there are many times when humans, especially those "of strong faith" who are far more twisted in their thought than those beings that they consider so evil.
Even though there are multiple differences between all the races, they still share many similar traits.
Art: 9/10
Indeed, the animation isnt THAT spectacular, mainly because it is an old anime. However, you can see that a big portion of the budget was spent on the things that really matter such as battles and boobs. You can clearly see that the animators put a lot of effort into animating those big bouncy juices pieces of fat. The battles are also animated really good and captivate the audience through the dynamics of the action
Sound: 9/10
First of all, let me begin with saying that the Opening of this anime is one of the best openings ever made (probably top 20 i'd say). The songs, as you will see in the following seasons, are a good fit for the story and have a cool melodicity and rythm.
Secondly, i want to mention that beisdes the bouncing tiddy sounds that were masterfully made and used, the other sound effects are also pretty good, especially those in battles. The music and the sound effects are fitting perfectly with the dynamics of battles which maximizes the enjoyment of those critical parts of the anime.
Characters : 9/10
I already said that Issei is actually a well-written character which actually has a lot of character development over the course of series, making it a better protagonist than others (for example Giorno Giovanna from JOJO's Golden Wind which is actually incredibly static in overall development).
Now let's get to other characters:
Rias Gremory : even if she is shown as a perfect being admired by many, she also faces a lot of issues, both personal and professional as she wants to be strong and dependable leader. She is clearly seen deeply caring of her "household" even if many demons consider theirs as being "expendable". The link between her and her servants allows her team to develop at a faster pace than other teams. Her character is more complex than yoiur average "hot redhead main girl".
Akeno Himejima (My wife) (hands off her): She is a very interesting character, extremely hot, with her three sizes of 102-60-89 a height of 168 cm and a weight of 54 kgs. She was designed in the way that she would represent the "Yamato Nadeshiko" aka the perfect japanese woman. She usually wears a shrine maiden outfit in her demon form and is cares alot about tradition. She is very dependable and a very caring person. There are a lot more things to be added about her, but i will get to this in my review of the 3rd season which i will add at a later date (STAY TUNED!)
Yuuto Kiba: even if he was designed as "perfect" he doesnt actually follow the stereotype of the "annoying cool dude" and is actually extremely friendly to Issei. His piece is a knight which symbolises bravery and as shown in the anime he is very dependable. His character is actually shown better in the second season so i won't add more things here.
The other characters are also quite interesting and they make for a diverse cast but i would rather keep focus on the more reelvant ones and continue in the following seasons.
Enjoyment: 10/10
This anime has everything : diverse cast (plot), cool action(plot) and big anime tiddies(plot)
Overall: 9/10
As an end note i want to talk about one more IMPORTANT topic and that is the REASON why the anime is actually good even if it is an "ecchi" in order to demolish the critics that were brought to this series.
"The plot is ecchi but ecchi is not the plot". What am i trying to say with this is that the way this anime was created, it had the ecchi at the "core".
The lewd scenes aren't as forced as in other anime (for example Shinmai Maou no Testament which is borderline hentai) and are used in order to define the characters better and to contribute to the development of the story instead of obstructing it.
The "lewd" is used in order to give Issei a "goal" and is not just your casual "oh no i've tripped and im accidentally swimming in tiddies" or the "underwear reveal" cliché.
In conclusion, i believe this is the peak ecchi anime and i fully recommend it to anyone. I will also make reviews on the other seasons in which i will discuss more about the philosophical themes present in the series.
