Review of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc
This is a review coming from a person who Did not like the first season 1 of demon slayer. Hence I’d like to believe I am able to include most of the communities perspective about demon slayer. TLDR:- good watch with the best animation in quite some time great sound, but has boring characters and an above-average shounen plot.an interesting world which sadly wasn't explored at all this season, stupidly long drawn out fight(well people still love it since its animated well) Warning for spoilers towards the end but I will warn before that and the rest is spoiler-freeDemon Slayer is a very difficult anime to critique, most of the story in it, is well, nothing new. Many shounen anime have offered very similar plotlines and even arguably in a better manner.
Yet demon slayer is able to shine even in the current cesspool of shounen anime by being a really pleasant watch due to its high production especially with the music, animations, and a very fresh and unique art style but that credit goes to the manga author.
This is exactly what pulled me through the majority of season 1 and give the season the train movie a chance. The movie however was one of the best I have seen in many years both in production and plot(unlike season 1) and I was quite hyped for the second season.
The story of season 1 was moderately interesting to awesome at some parts (only the demon family piqued my interest very honestly), And the train greatly improved upon the lack of story and many, including me, were finally invested in the show. Hence season 2 had the best start it could have possibly asked for.And it started off really strong, a good villain with a good air of mystery as well as a lot of great moments and tasteful fanservice with the main trio (cross-dressing) and a very lovable new character tenzen. everything was an 8/10 for most of the first 6 episodes
Now, most people would call whatever follows episode 6 to 11 a masterpiece me, I think id need to rant a little
These episodes were so so badly drawn out 6 episodes (6 is inclusive) that I felt I am watching dragon ball Z.
The amount of asspull that happened in between these episodes is honestly infuriating , each episode was a guaranteed cliffhanger, the demons basically ASSPULL A new technique out of their literal self and hit the MC with it, and the MCs are more like demon(s) themselves since they survive no matter what due to some fucking god-given grace. examples include spoilers so id mark em as spoilers.
Demon gets cut? no problem it's two demons in one!
Demon head gets cut ? no problem you got to cut them both at once
Sound hashira is strong? no problem poison nerf to make MC relevant.
Tanjiro almost dead? No problem he is no more.
Tengen waifu seem useless? No problem make em harem bait in OP and kawai
Tanjiro doesn't have the strength to cut the neck? HMM use the power of shouting
Inosuke is stabbed? No problem he shifted his organs so he ain't dead
Nezuko is winning? No problem lets make her lose so that fight seems more hard-fought
Tanjiro almost dead again? Sister flashback and revive!
Tengen dies of poison? No problem he is just playing dead while tanjiro getting his ass beat
Zenitsu is sleeping but need his strength? No problem turns out he can communicate too!
No more cliffhangers left they both got cut? No problem l demons use dirty trick jutsu in ep10
Tanjiro LITERALLY CAN'T MOVE? NO PROBLEM TRY HARDER EZ CAN MOVE AGAIN
Well, why do people critisize Dragon ball z constant screming, weird asspulls, and it even has a vegeta who can never get a W (NEZUKO never wins she is there for moe / sympathy points?) , surely you cant enjoy unnecessarily dragged out fights just because animation is great?
Then you are only confirming the fact thatdemon slayer is nothing but carried by animation and sound.
But with all that said id still say that episode 7 to 11 are a 6/10 due to the sheer quality of animation and sound design if nothing else, but if they did a better job id not hesitate to give this season of demon slayer a 8 or even a 9!
Now to score sheet
Story:- 5/10
Nothing of relevance was explored in this arc, a bit of backstory here and there, but NOTHING THAT CONTRIBUTES to the overall lore, the fight is long dragged out like I mentioned animated perfectly yes but that ain't gonna cut it. The demon slayer world is pretty interesting and I was hoping a season 2 would take the story a bit further but maybe this was intended to be a visual source material seller IG. Season 1 first part still had an (even if standard shounen shit) actual story season 1 part 2 was actually a great train arc that set things up so beautifully and then we get, classic battle simulator shoutfest with asspulls, WHY? The attempted comedy parts are either nice sometimes or a cringe-fest there is no middle ground.
Art and animation:- 10/10
Hands down unbeatable. Even if you find yourself bored to death you can’t just hit the close button it's just that fucking good.
Characters:- 6/10
SIGHS
Another rant huh?
In my onion any character that i can summarize in two sentences is probably shit.
Tanjiro :- standard good guy protag kun with insane monologues and asspull capacity AND SCREAM
Zenitsu:- Why cant he be less of whimp and strong while awake? I mean even when he IS STRONG WHILE ASLEEP he seems to talk to tanjiro and inosuke like he is awake WHY THE MUST SLEEP = STRONG setting FFS?
Nezuko:- Vegeta of this series, almost wins but some shit happens, and back to sleep.
Tengen waifus:- damsel in distress plus thicc THAT IS LITERALLY IT. Oh and they ADD KAWAII point in the OP.
However there are good ones as well :-
Inosuke:- good character nothing to complain about, is actually funnier than zenitsu even tho he isn't the gag character.
tengen:-Good character, nice backstory, good personality nothing to complain about
Sound:- 10/10
Welp sound is amazing OST during Fights are much more important than the animations, many may not realize that but ufotable certainly does and it shows.OP is great artistically as well as the music, OST never lets us have a dull moment. ED is great too and artistically pleasing as well
Now, should you watch this? definitely yes, however, the enjoyment will vary depending on how many shounen's and similar stuff you math have seen. My advice is to just drop in and enjoy the ride because this is great, but it certainly isn't era-defining like the attack on titan is. Any anime or even non-anime fan for that matter can enjoy this so do not hesitate to pick it up , but do beware that there isn't much in terms of plot or characters that this series will offer.
