I need to move this show out of my head so here's a collection of words. I started & dropped the show in October of 2023 after the first four episodes were dense & I wasn’t attached to the characters. I returned to watch it in January 2025 and found myself enjoying the human characters, density & drama to the point of completion although the initial episodes had higher quality than the later and felt significantly longer than their 20 minute allocation. I recommend this title to those in early adulthood or older as you may find similarities with the cast but keep in mind itis far from perfect, lacks consistent pacing, is frustrating and the overall message changes as the episodes stack.

The first half of Sing Yesterday for Me was slow but dense with a focus on loss of purpose after school, personal growth and relationships. Everything including its characters felt human and the initial episodes were exceptional but at some point the show lost its magic and picked up pace by having significant time skips, introducing new characters/plots, grinding characters to a halt and losing that density.

While the characters feel very human & their depictions are great at showcasing it, they can overstay their welcome in regards to their state of emotions & mentality especially when longer time skips come into play. The first half of the season did a great job at managing this, but in the second half it reaches extremes with a swap of main character focus to Shinako. Shinako I found was the worst part of the show as she was the linchpin to anyone else’s progression and received a significant amount of focus & screen time that affected the show. When other characters understood their problems, grew, improved & stated their intentions, Shinako was stagnate, destructive and selfish without any interruption for a hefty duration. I reached a point where I was verbally reacting to her actions and their consequences each episode because it was so repetitive and irritating. These feelings were not limited to Shinako as her side character also had similar issues but they were purely amplified by Shinako’s lake of action & clarity.

Outside of Shinako, one off characters took the limelight for full episodes that affected the pacing and while they were great episodes in isolation, they ultimately added nothing to the story and that time could have been used to explore the significant time skips, character backstories/interests & emotional connections.

The final episodes while also having good scenes in isolation were an absolute mess and joke in the context of the show’s themes & character progression to the point it was a great disservice. The second half of the show was so jarring and frustrating that by its conclusion I wondered what the point of it all was and questioned the outcome.

Sing Yesterday for Me was very human but fuck it messed so much shit up with its presentation and it could have been so much better if it maintained the magic & density from early episodes and was maybe given more time to explore the time skipped periods to develop the events that resulted in the ending and the infatuations of the characters.

I think some will enjoy this title for the human like characters, period of time and drama especially those who have been through struggles of purpose, emotional & internal growth & relationship conflicts but keep in mind the show's handling of these themes degrade as the episodes stack.
