Review of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Fantastic setting, music, direction, animation, all of it are great. Revived my hopes for animes with fantastical setting which has been ruined these years due to the flooding of isekai genre. Characters are still stereotypical, not like they introduced any new styles or whatever. Even the setting is diluted if you've watched a lot of isekai. But the lore behind it, how these people banded together, the events encountered makes the overall blending together of a journey more interesting. You don't quite remember the names of the places (or perhaps remember them for how generic it is), but you recall the emotions in the mainoccasions (character deaths, party taking a break, doing side quests etc.). Fern, Stark & Frieren having very little communication skills make it interesting contrast to Himmel & party.
Absolutely recommended, although may be a turn off for people who don't enjoy having action in every episode or in it expecting deep lores, creative multilayered storytelling & plot twists. It's a simple journey about grief, dealing with one's loss & learning the meaning of tiny moments in life among others with an almost immortal elf that naturally emotionally detached due to how long she could live. It does go hard when needed on action though, so the payoff is certainly there, you just need to be patient.
