While by no means perfect, Gate manages to (mostly) balance the goofy anime tropes (slacker otaku MC, harem-ish elements, etc.) with some serious geo-political and military elements. As a military guy, I appreciated the way the technical weapon characteristics were captured, and that magic, while present, wasn't a cheat code vs. reality in the show. I didn't think Itami (the nominal MC) was as well rounded as he could be, but he always came through when it mattered. Anything else would get into spoiler territory, but if you are undecided, try a couple of episodes before bailing, as it gets more interesting as it goes along.
