Review of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind
I'm new to JoJo's and became a fan after watching Part 3. I was very excited for Part 5, because most people absolutely love it. Now that I've finished it, I really must say that this part is undeniably overrated and not as good as people make it out to be. Araki is a very creative and talented mangaka, but he isn't a great storyteller at all... let me explain. This review will contain spoilers. First of all, JJBA isn't really outstanding in terms of characters or storytelling, never been. The characters are all very loveable, though most of them always fit into a certain stereotype, fulfilltheir role and are nothing more than that, really.
Part 5 takes this to an extreme, as the entire cast feels very soulless and bland. The characters could have been nice and compelling if they actually had some development, but the only ones with potential either got kicked out of the story or never got the development needed to make me feel attached to them. Giorno is also probably the most boring Jojo so far; his goal is simply to become a "gangstar" and take over the Italian mafia, but other than that he never really has anything interesting going on. He always knows what to do, how to defeat an enemy and his final fight against Diavolo was literally just him getting a power-up and basically becoming god. The fact that he is Dio's son could have resulted in some interesting interactions with older characters, or maybe an identity crisis within Giorno, but that plotpoint was literally just forgotten about and has no signifance whatsoever.
The other characters aren't really any better though, they're nice but very forgettable and have very little motivation or reason behind their actions. The character deaths are pure shock factor and I didn't really feel bad for the group because as I said, I never grew attached to them anyway.
Fugo, for me, was the only interesting character in the group, but he never had the chance to be more than just "interesting" because he was never given any significant screentime other than one (1) fight and then was kicked out of the story for apparently no reason.
And that brings me to the second point which probably bugs me the most about Golden Wind, and that is the god awful storywriting. Let's be real, the Parts before that don't excel in that area either, but Part 5 feels especially bad in comparison.
First of all, the premise of the grander story could be interesting if the characters were to make it compelling. Basically, the group of protagonists has to protect a girl (Trish) that has even less personality and is literally just a plot device. They need to uncover the boss' identity and that's basically it.
Throughout the story, there are some major decisions that I simply cannot understand. First of all, to throw out one of the more interesting characters for absolutely no reason at all. I simply don't understand why an author would create a character to then just scrap him entirely and forget about his existence.
Second of all, Bruno's fate. I understand the reason behind this plotpoint, though I very much dislike it. Killing off a character, then make him return as a zombie only for the audience to wait for his ultimate death is (in my opinion) not a good way to end a character "arc". The audience has already long accepted the fact that this character will meet their end and it's literally just waiting for a point on a checklist to get done. Bruno himself could have been interesting, though his "crazy" side was also just forgotten about after Giorno beat him.
Then third, the finale. It feels very unsatisfying to say the least. The last two episodes feel very out of place, unnecessary and more like OVA/filler than something that should end this season. The fight against Diavolo before that is pretty boring. It has some nice mysterious vibes and addresses some worldbuilding stuff, but other than that it doesn't really feel like a proper finale where the protagonist must ultimately defeat the villain.
All in all, Golden Wind was very disappointing and a huge downgrade after Part 4. At least the OST is outstanding and the art very pretty, though it does look very stiff and strange at times.
