Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
SPOILER! If Violet Evergarden had an abortion, this anime is the result. The ancient magus bride is full of a beautiful art work and impressive sounds only, the story and the characters made this anime fall into the water more than Chise fell in the water. 1- Story: i don't what they wanted to tell, it started nice, a mage bought this girl from an auction that sells anything including humans. that's like the first 10 mins from the first episode then it started to get stupid, he took his "puppy" with calling her "puppy" to his home, gave her a weird bath, then explained to her thatshe is his "puppy", he paid a lot of money to buy her,she will be his apprentice, and she will be his bride. I think he doesn't know what he wants from her, he want puppy apprentice or bride. the 24 episodes went towards they getting married, but without any kind of love or love showing.
Chise is a depressed teenager "15" she barley talk to anyone, all what she said was :"um" "uh" smile or nothing but a straight face even for the people who helped her, was nice to her, fed her.The mage is a wall shaped into a cool character design yet he is socially awkward person that doesn't understand humans feeling and suppose to learn from Chise. The 24 episodes didn't show the mage teach Chise magic and Chise didn't teach him any human feelings, even when he asked for something she just doesn't talk with her stupid straight face. Chise goes in an "emotional adventure" nearly every episode, sad ones , love ones, weird ones, none of them are interesting and she end up in trouble and fall in the water and the mage comes to save her. i didn't see any story there.
2- Art: Amazing work, fabulous magical world, maybe this is the only reason i finished it, i loved the art, it was really magical.
3- Sounds: From the intro to the ending the sounds were very good, nice piano playing depends on the emotions of the scene "if the story had any". well done.
4- Characters: aside from the mage and Chise which i will get to them last, every character started to be bad or act bad then they are nice almost everyone,Angelica taught Chise magic then the mage came and told her not to teach Chise magic then showering her with love,wisdom,help,gifts...etc, bad or act bad then nice. Lindel kidnapping Chise with a dragon went to dragon land then he is nice helping her with her staff "which only used twice as a mage apprentice" gifts, helping, he even raised Elias, bad or act bad then nice. The sorcerer, the fairies, and the witch. i got really bored from this i mean stop it just stop it let them be nice and that's it, they didn't accomplish anything by doing this.
Chise character confused the hell out of me, she wants family and she adores the mage for calling her family and actually giving her one, yet she didn't listen once to what eh told her to do, 4 episodes focused on how she should talk to him and yet she didn't, EVER. they got married with showing us the love or the talking just like her staff a whole episode on her making her staff and how she went to Nevin and talked to him, and she only used it 3 times one of them didn't work. i wish she or they showed us the love and the talking she wanted to do because i was waiting for it and i didn't see it. she falls in the water a lot, like a lot, even Lindel saw it.
Elias character was as confusing as Chise, man what do you want from her, you want to teach her magic? OK lets do this, he didn't, you want her your puppy? you got it, he didn't, you want her your bride and your love? done , he didn't even bring her a ring or a ceremony (don't worry he knows about wedding rings). What the hell you want? you mentioned how much she cost you more than how much she cost you and in the end you didn't do anything about it, when he gets mad he becomes a monster and run away or he wants to eat her, everything was confusing about him.
4- Enjoyment:The anime based on magic and sorcery, i wish they had more magic moments when Chise and Elias used their magic to amaze me not for opening doors or teleporting, or making a staff, i wish she used the staff more, i wish she fought Cartaphilus or the ashen eye dude, but none of that happen, i loved the art and the sounds. but maybe when i finished i enjoyed that "phew man finally" feeling more than actually enjoy it.
Overall: i wanted to love it, but it fails to make me love it, as Chise failed to show Elias love and vice versa. i wont recommend this to anyone.
