Review of Attack on Titan
Am I the only one who found this genuinely scary lolllll Aesthetically could have gone further imo. I feel like the combo of creepy (but kinda beautiful) titans (whether eating ppl or just chilling), medieval European architecture and idyllic nature could have been utilised better to generate some really striking imagery but... oh well. I feel like this might be more to do with the style of animation that was popular at the time this was released than individual creative decisions. There were some pretty moments here and there anyway. I watched Berserk recently though and I feel like that show sets the standard for sublimeanime hellscapes...
But yea the plot is kinda silly at times and doesn't always make a lot a lot of sense, especially at the start, where there is no real exposition before the action begins, and the way that the exposition is eventually doled out in following episodes feels clunky and uneven. and many/most of the characters feel a bit flat. There is some good dialogue here and there but the characters often feel interchangeable or gimmicky (which makes sense considering they kill them off so quickly and have to keep coming up with new ppl), even the main ones. Eren is lowkey boring for a lead.
What I like about the plot though is that it moves so quickly and is full of so many twists and surprises that I never lose interest and am constantly gagged, which is why I've still given it a high rating. I also like the way that humanity is so completely outmatched by the titans, they are constantly getting decimated and barely facing any victory (look forward to seeing how/if this dynamic changes in the following seasons though). Also on top of this, the way their understanding of the titan threat is constantly evolving, and each new understanding reveals a new layer of how fucked they are. As a representation of world politics it feels very true to life (*_*)
I feel like it definitely glamourises the military industrial complex butttt that's also a dumb critique bc what did I expect
